Project Name

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office and SUNY Broome have initiated a groundbreaking program at the Broome County Correctional Facility, introducing a community college "life skills" curriculum to inmates. Led by Undersheriff Sam Davis, the program is rooted in the "Success: Foundations of Self-Management" textbook authored by SUNY Broome Professor Gian P. Roma. Professor Roma emphasizes the importance of these skills for individual success, highlighting their pivotal role in academic and career advancement. SUNY Broome President Dr. Tony Hawkins commends the initiative, expressing its commitment to providing education and opportunities for upward mobility. The overwhelmingly positive feedback from participating inmates underscores the program's effectiveness. As articulated by Professor Roma, the textbook assists students in reaching their academic and career goals by elucidating the behaviors they are solely responsible for, their significance, assessment methods, and their potential to pave the way for success.
